Roehampton plans move forward

A planning application setting out proposals for revitalising the central Roehampton area is set to come before councillors later this year.

Following a third round of public consultation, the council will be pressing ahead with plans for new homes, shops and open space. As well as a new medium-sized supermarket the scheme includes new retail units for existing traders. The redevelopment of three existing blocks would create 281 new homes, including a mix of private and affordable flats.

A new public square would create a green, pedestrian friendly space alongside a new library. Other ideas include a new youth facility and community space. Executive member for regeneration James Cousins said:

There's been a lot of talking about the various ideas. Now I sense residents want us to get on and work these up. The whole aim is to attract new investment into a redeveloped central area. At the moment there is simply too much concrete. The designs aim to open this up and create a warm and welcoming face for this part of Roehampton. We are continuing to fine tune some aspects of the proposals based on the feedback we have received and will continue to keep residents in the picture.

Local people will have a further opportunity to comment on the proposals once the planning application is submitted. For more information visit www.wandsworth.gov.uk/roehampton.
