No change in council tax

Council tax bills for local services will be unchanged this year. The announcement of a standstill tax means residents in a typical Band D property will pay £372 for the services provided by the council. The Mayor of London's share of the bill will be £310 - an increase of two per cent. The combined figure of £682 remains the lowest in the country. Across London only three councils have set a combined charge below £1,000.

Deputy council leader Maurice Heaster said:

Leaving our residents with more money in their pockets is a priority. For the elderly and others on fixed incomes it's a lifeline. It's about giving everyone choice over how they spend their money.

This year's Government grant increase of two per cent is the lowest amount possible under the current rules. The council has been told to expect even smaller increases in future years.

The aggregate Band D figure of £682 compares to the current charge of £676 and is the amount payable by two person households across most of the borough. Band D residents liable for the levy from the Wimbledon and Putney Commons Conservators will pay a slightly higher figure of £705.
